Mescaline or Peyote has a long history of use in ceremonies and religious meditation circles of the North American Indians, by Mexico’s indigenous people, and elsewhere.
When used as an intoxicant, a high dose of this can result in drug induced psychosis.
The substance is not physically addictive, and it is rare to find a habitual user.
Reasons for this may be three-fold - a habitual user would likely land before too much time passed in a psychiatric ward under heavy sedation, and the other reason is that mescaline is not a popular drug in north America and cannot easily be found. The third reason is that most users of this substance do not try it twice, the effects being startling and anxiety-ridden, along with the nausea and extremely bitter taste that upsets the stomach.
However, should you or a person you know end up in the unfortunate position of needing to safely detox from having ingested too much peyote, where the psychosis becomes so extreme as to remove the user from reality and therefore at risk through accidental or self inflicted injury, you have no other option than to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital, where you will be heavily sedated, or depending on the severity of the psychosis, being locked up overnight in a jail cell till the effects wear off (about 6 – 12 hours or more, depending on the dosage)
Once the hallucinatory effects have passed, some nausea may still be present, and possibly a headache, and if the substance was smoked, lung irritation may linger as well.
There are no specialized detox protocols for mescaline/peyote detox apart from what was mentioned above. The criteria for deciding to go into a drug detox program situation as described above would be primarily “safety” of the user, and those around the user.
