As a result of a task force that included the Housing Authority of the city of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Drug and Alcohol Programs, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Tenant Council & Junior Tenant Council of the Addison Terrace Public Housing Community, Addison began providing substance abuse prevention/intervention services to youth and their families residing in the immediate community. The scope of services has continued to increase over the years as communitys needs evolved. The mission remains essentially the same, as does the population Addison serve. However, the geographic service area has extended outside of the Addison Terrace community to include The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding counties.

Anuvia Prevention and Recovery Center, a private, non-profit organization, promotes wellness in our community by providing compassionate treatment and prevention services of the highest quality to impact the disease of addiction.  Founded in 1958, by the Mecklenburg County ABC Board, Anuvia is CARF accredited and an affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Arbor Place, Inc. began operations as a halfway house in 1976. The organization was started by a small group of individuals that had an interest in alcohol and drug abuse services being available to all Dunn County residents. The agency’s title was the “Dunn County Association on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse.” This was changed to Arbor Place, Inc. in 1996.

ARC was created to provide a multidisciplinary model for the delivery of women responsive, family focused, multicultural, substance abuse services tailored to substance abusing women and in selected programs with a specific focus on pregnant and postpartum women and their infants. Based on best practices and current research, services are delivered through residential and community-based, licensed AODA day treatment programs some programs with licensed onsite childcare center or the ability for women to live with their children during the course of their treatment.

For instance, we often see doctors prescribe a medication to treat depression, without ever examining the patient for conditions that are most certain to cause depressive symptoms such as infections, malabsorption and vitamin deficiencies. When a depressed patient is assessed, rarely does a doctor inquire about gastrointestinal problems or pains – signs of GI dysfunctions that can lead to significantly decreased nutrient levels in the body which can prevent synthesis of necessary neurotransmitters and cause depression.
