About Mescaline Print E-mail

Mescaline is a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid, and is typically used as an entheogen, meaning it creates God within. It has been a supplement or tool, which has been used for different practices of transcendence, meditation, and psychedelic psychotherapy. The drug occurs naturally in the peyote cactus, San Pedro cactus, and the Peruvian Torch cactus. Mescaline was first identified in 1897, and was later produced in 1919.

History of Mescaline

Throughout Native American history, mescaline has been used in religious ceremonies, and this has been documented since the earliest European contact. When the drug is prepared traditionally, the top of the cactus is cut off at ground level in order for new heads to grow out. These heads are then dried, and look like disc shape buttons. These buttons are then chewed or boiled in water to make a hallucinogenic drink, which has an intoxicating effect. The amount that will cause hallucinations is typically 300 to 600 mg of mescaline.

Effects and Side Effects

Mescaline users can and will experience visual hallucinations, as well as:

  • Altered state of consciousness
  • Euphoria
  • Dream like state
  • Laughter and psychedelic experience

Side effects include:

  • Anxiety
  • Increased heart beat
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Headache

Legal Status of Mescaline

Mescaline was made illegal in the USA in 1970, and was then prohibited internationally in 1971 by the Convention of Psychotropic Substances. It is categorized as a Schedule 1 hallucinogen. It is only legal for certain Native groups, and is only used in traditional Native American church ceremonies. If caught manufacturing or selling mescaline, a person can receive five years in jail and a $15,000 fine. In Canada, mescaline in its raw form is considered illegal.
