Aftercare Programs for Drug & Alcohol Rehab Centers in California

Hundreds of drug and alcohol rehabilitation options are available in California, and many of these facilities will offer aftercare support programs. An aftercare program would be services that allow those who have completed drug treatment, to continue to work on their sobriety. This could be attending support groups and further counseling or living at a sober living home or community. Anytime that someone does complete drug rehab, there will be some type of exit plan established, and if aftercare follow-up or an actual facility-based program can be done, this option should be considered. Aftercare programs are excellent options and will significantly improve your ability to maintain your sobriety. Struggling with drug addiction is an emotional roller coaster, and the treatment process is not easy. When you put in so much work to get rid of your addiction, it only makes sense to continue to improve yourself and take more responsibility for your life.

Aftercare and Sober Living Home Success in California

Within the state of California, it is difficult to know how may sober living homes or aftercare communities operate because sober living residents are protected by the Americans With Disabilities Act. Essentially this means police and zoning officials have to treat them as they would any other family residence. Sober living homes, for example, in California, are not inspected nor regulated, and as of 2019, more than a dozen bills have been introduced to address the addiction recovery industry. Aftercare helps prevent relapse, and the programs available in California help a recovering addict stay on track with recovery while achieving short-term and long-term goals.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has conducted many studies surrounding sober living homes and communities. One particular study examined multiple sober living communities in California and saw the average stay within these homes surpassed the National Institute on Drug Abuse recommendations of at least 90 days. The average length of stay at these sober living homes was between 166 and 254 days. One of the patterns of the outcome included residents who stopped their substance use between the start of treatment and a six month follow up, maintained those improvements at 12 and 18 months of follow up. Many recovering addicts are hesitant to dedicate the time with a sober living home or aftercare; however, the treatment and continuing care will only benefit sobriety.
