Akwesasne is a Mohawk Nation located along the border of northern New York State and Canada. Most of the land is situated in Canada, but a small portion is within New York State. The residents of the community consider themselves one community and have a separate police force, jurisdictional issues and national laws. Approximately over 12,000 residents are living within the nation, and the portion within New York State is federally recognized as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. In December of 2018, the St. Regis Mohawk Nation filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors over their roles within the opioid epidemic. The lawsuit was filed with the District Court for the Northern District of New York. The premise of the lawsuit is based on the accusation that doctors and patients were misled to believe that prescription opioids were safe and non-addictive per an NNY 360 article. Within the Mohawk Nation, there have been increased problems with child abuse and neglect, family dysfunction, criminal activity, poverty, property damage, and unemployment because of opioid abuse. Many of the resources within the Mohawk Nation were dedicated to combatting problems associated with addiction. This has taken away from funds needed for education, cultural preservation, and welfare programs. Opioid abuse has impacted many Native American Indian nations across the country. There are local treatment resources to help, but most must rely on the rehabilitation resources within the rest of the state. Opioid addiction requires lengthy treatment, such as medical detox and inpatient drug rehab.
