While substance abuse has been on the rise all across the nation for some time, certain states have been affected more so than others have. Alabama is one of those states. Alabama has always been a hot spot for cocaine, crack, and meth, given its rural and rustic southern geography. Now, with the advent of prescription drug abuse, Alabama has experienced yet another steep climb in drug and alcohol addiction. Drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation is easily the best way to tackle addiction. It is the most effective and the most intensive. It is strongly encouraged that those who are addicted enter into and go through inpatient rehab programs. This type of treatment is the most comprehensive, because the individual is required to stay at the facility for the duration of the treatment, and this will allow them to focus solely on their recovery, without any distraction from the outside world.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Within Alabama Counties

The different counties in Alabama have definitely been affected by alcohol and drug abuse in the past few years, but there are some counties that have had it worse than others. For instance, for the 2014-2018 period, the counties with the highest number of deaths were Mobile County, Jefferson County, and Tuscaloosa County, with 131, 68, and 64 deaths respectively. Next, there are deaths caused by drug overdoses, and the three counties with the highest drug poisoning death rate were Jefferson, Madison, and Mobile counties. They respectively had 594, 185, and 172 deaths per 100,000 population between 2016 and 2018, according to County Health Rankings. We spoke earlier of residential treatment, but its counterpart, outpatient treatment, can be just as successful. Even though it allows for more freedom, since the person does not have to live at the facility, it can undoubtedly be a success if the individual is truly committed. This type of treatment is best for those who have a strong support system at home, as they have to focus on their recovery while still being present in the outside world that may have triggered their addiction in the past. Anyone who really wishes to get help and recover from their addiction can succeed if they stick to their treatment program and sobriety.

Reduction of Substance Abuse in Alabama Counties

In Alabama counties, there are many organizations that offer services to help reduce substance abuse within their community. First, there is the Addiction Prevention Coalition (APC), and it is a non-profit organization that works to eliminate addiction in Central Alabama. Next, there is Partnership for a Drug-Free Community, and one of the things they work on is reducing opioid abuse and addiction in Madison County and its surrounding area. They provide safe disposal pouches throughout the area, as well as medication drop boxes, all in an effort to prevent unused, expired, or unwanted medications from ending up in the wrong hands. Finally, there is the Alabama Alcohol & Drug Abuse Association that is dedicated to ensuring that professionals in the field of substance abuse are educated and certified correctly, so that the services they offer are of the highest quality.
