Although it is not a large percentage of military personnel whom have had problems with drug abuse compared to civilians, it affects service members the same way.

Prescription drugs and alcohol are among the more commonly abused drugs in the military, with many of the prescription medications abused being opiates or painkillers.  Among the traditional treatment programs available in the state of Alabama there is also the Army Substance Abuse Program, which provides prevention, education and training, treatment and various out reach services for service members and their families.  Drug and alcohol addiction cannot always be beaten alone, and it will take dedicated and trained people to help those in need of treatment.  Just as American service members dedicate themselves to their country it is important that drug and alcohol treatment services are there for them and can help them take control of an addiction.  Many changes are being made in the military to help curb these problems, and because of this, many service members are being helped as a result of these positive changes.
