Binge drinking leads to alcohol poisoning, while also causing addiction. National health authorities report binge drinking among women represents four or more drinks, and for men, this is five or more drinks within a short time-frame. The average US adults who binge drinks consume eight drinks within a short time frame. Binge drinking leads to a higher level of alcohol in the body. Many of the alcohol-related traffic incidents and fatalities were the result of binge drinking.

According to the Department of Transportation, in 2017 there were 1120 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in California. Of all the driving fatalities that year, this represented 31%. Around 65% of the alcohol-related driving fatalities involved a BAC of .15 or higher. Throughout the entire state in 2017, 122,961 people were charged with driving under the influence.
