Substance abuse has definitely been present in Alleghany County and its county seat, the city of Covington. It has been causing a lot of damage in the community just in the last few years, and it still a problem that is present to this day. We will be focusing on alcohol abuse as this is the issue that is causing the most concern at the moment. Firstly, if we look at excessive drinking, we can see that 16% of adults in the county reported it in 2017, which includes binge and heavy drinking. Binge drinking, even only once, can cause irritation or inflammation of vital organs such as the liver, pancreas, and stomach. Not only that but drinking excessively will also impair the ability of the body to heal from such injuries. Alcohol abuse in general can even lead to fatalities, and between 2014 and 2018, alcohol-impaired driving caused 5 deaths in Alleghany County, which equals 29% of all driving deaths, according to County Health Rankings. Treatment can be very beneficial and can help those who are struggling with alcohol and/or drug abuse, and one type of treatment that is quite common is a residential program. For some, this might be the most appropriate option, because it does ask of them that they live at the center during the treatment. This means being taken completely out of their usual environment and being able to focus only on their recovery. Inpatient treatment might not be best for everyone, depending on several factors, but if someone can afford to pause their life for a period of time, it is the most intensive program. Truth is, so long as the person is committed
