Are Benzodiazepines Addictive?

Becoming addicted to benzodiazepines is shockingly easy.  The drugs cause your dopamine Definition of the word Dopaminelevels to surge flooding your brain with feel-good neurotransmitters Definition of the word neurotransmitters.  A strong wave of pleasure is rewarding and the satisfaction of not caring about your problems is addicting.  The drugs begin to accumulate within the fatty tissue of the body.  This will amplify the effects of the drugs and the substances will remain active in your body.  Benzodiazepines will alter the structure and function of certain receptors in the brain.  This makes them more susceptible to excitable surges from other neurotransmitters.

When this happens, it increases and even intensifies the rush of dopamine going to the brain.  The unnatural chemical reactions happening within the brain cause dependency.  The feel-good feeling is hard to give up.  The person starts to rely on the drug because of how it makes them feel.  The drug is used to cope with difficult emotional or physical discomfort.  When you rely on a drug to stabilize yourself, it becomes easy to justify using it all the time.  Essentially you are addicted to it and rely on how it makes you feel.

Initially, the body becomes dependent on the drug, which leads to addiction.  Quitting these drugs is difficult.  Not only are you addicted to them you are physically dependent on them.  It is never advised to abruptly stop taking them.  The dependency does create severe withdrawal symptoms that force many people to continue using.  Benzodiazepine addiction is a common problem throughout the United States.  These addictions often lead to overdose deaths.  This occurs when the drug is mixed or used with alcohol or other drugs.  An overdose can lead to brain damage, coma, and even death.
