The city of Auburn is located in Cayuga County on the north end of Owasco Lake, which is one of the Finger Lakes in Central New York. Auburn is the largest city in Cayuga County and the county seat and also home to the Auburn Correctional Facility. Unfortunately, some of those who are addicted to drugs or alcohol become caught up in a cycle of crime and addiction. The result is prison for some, and it may continue unless they receive help or support while incarcerated. The city of Auburn has a population of around 80,000 people with a median age of about 42 and a rate of poverty of 11%. Much of the economy in the city revolves around health care, manufacturing, education, public administration and finance. According to a Sub-County Health Data Report for County Health Rankings-Related Measures 2016 in Cayuga County, over 10% of the population in Auburn self-report excessive drinking. There are many contributing factors to why substance abuse occurs. Financial stress is a common problem, especially with being able to afford housing or pay rent. According to the report mentioned above, approximately 37% of Auburn residents are housing insecure, which means they always, usually, or sometimes are stressed about having enough money for their rent or mortgage. Financial struggle is a common reason why drugs or alcohol are abused. The drugs become a way to cope with the difficulties in life but create more problems, primarily financial. Anyone struggling with addiction should seek help immediately starting with a drug detox program. The next step will be done at a drug rehab center to really handle the underlying reasons why the person started using in the first place.
