Bath County’s county seat is the city of Warm Springs and they have been affected greatly by substance abuse in the last few years. A great deal of damage has been caused by this recently, more specifically by alcohol abuse. For us to truly understand the problem concerning the abuse of alcohol in the county, we will be going a few statistics. For instance, excessive drinking, which includes binge and heavy drinking, was reported by 16% of adults in the county just in 2017, according to County Health Rankings. There are many risks associated with binge drinking, and some are irreversible. This type of drinking severely impairs a person’s judgment, and this can lead to bad decisions being made. These decisions can result in alcohol poisoning, serious health problems, car crashes, and even deaths in some cases. In fact, between 2014 and 2018, one fatality was caused by alcohol-impaired driving. This statistic might seem low, but truth is, even one death caused by substance abuse is one too many. Alcohol and drug abuse are not an issue that discriminates; it can affect anyone, no matter their situation or age. Even youth in a community can be struggling with substance abuse issues. With the stress they are under every day, added to the pressure they can get from their loved ones or school, they might find an escape with drugs and/or alcohol. This is a temporary solution though, and it can lead to devastating effects on their health and life. Treatment for youth is available, and such programs are made specifically to serve their needs, and the specialists can be quite helpful in making the teens discover what has caused their addiction. After finding this out, they will also be able to find alternative solutions to the stress in their life that don’t involve alcohol or drugs.
