The hamlet of Bohemia is a census-designated place in Suffolk County along the south shore of Long Island within the town of Islip. The population of the city is estimated at over 9,200 people with a median age of 42 and approximately 6% living below the poverty line. Many towns the size of Bohemia struggle with the social and economic problems of drug and alcohol abuse. These issues are not on a large scale such as within larger cities. However, across Suffolk County, issues with alcohol and drug abuse are prevalent. According to the New York Department of Health, the number of alcohol-related motor vehicle injuries and deaths within the county is 43.7 per 100,000 population. Additionally, the age-adjusted percentage of adults binge drinking during the past month was 17.7%, which is lower than Long Island and New York State. According to a Suffolk County Community Health Assessment (CHA) for 2014 to 2017, the abuse of opioids significantly rose in Suffolk County and Staten Island. Per the Suffolk County medical examiner, the deaths due to pain medication rose by 70% between 2004 and 2011. There was a considerable increase in the misuse of oxycodone and oxymorphone, which are two potent pain medications. Most pain medication addictions start with a prescription. Many other issues begin with an unused prescription left over, which is then misused. The abuse potential of these drugs progresses quickly, and the drug user becomes dependent on the drug leading to dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal management and lengthy inpatient care are required to ensure the patient makes a full recovery.
