GET A CALL BACK

Bristol County is a county that is facing many issues, and one of them is certainly the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. This is a problem that has caused a great deal of damage in the community, and it will continue doing so until it is tackled effectively. For individuals who are suffering from substance abuse, treatment is the correct thing to do, but sometimes, before attending a substance abuse treatment center, one may need to go attend a drug detox program, as this will help them go through the withdrawal symptoms while being supervised, so they can then attend a treatment program that will help them deal with the emotional or psychological issues that caused them to use drugs or alcohol and get addicted. This way, they address all aspects of the addiction and can fully recover.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Bristol County, MA

The statistics we will be going over will prove that there is a real and active problem with substance abuse in Bristol County. To start with, excessive drinking is an issue that has been affecting more than a fifth of adults in the county, as 21% of them reported binge or heavy drinking in 2017. Staying on the subject of alcohol, there were lots of deaths that were caused by alcohol-impaired driving, more specifically 62 deaths between 2014 and 2018, which is equal to 30% of all driving deaths for that period. In addition to this, for 2016-2018, the drug poisoning death rate was at 770 deaths per 100,000 population, which shows us that drug overdoses commonly cause deaths in the county. As for opioid abuse, the prescribing rate can be a good way to determine how prevalent opioids are. Based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prescribing rate for 2018 was at 55.5 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons. This is the highest rate of all counties in Massachusetts.

Bristol County's Substance Abuse Prevention Efforts

Thankfully, in Bristol County, there are lots of efforts put into the prevention of substance abuse. To help reduce the damage caused by the opioid epidemic, there are many prescription dropbox locations in the county that can be useful for residents who wish to get rid of unwanted or expired medications. The Bristol County Sheriff's Office has a K-9 Unit, which is trained to help in many cases, such as calls related to explosives and narcotics. It also offers many public education services, such as the Alcohol/Drug Awareness Program, which is given in some schools, and teaches students the real dangers of drugs and alcohol, as some kids are exposed to substances very young. There is also Project SLAM, which makes students tour a jail and listen to stories of the inmates and how they got where they are, and this includes gangs, experimenting with drugs and getting hooked on them, etc. Another program that is similar to this is the Choices program, which is aimed at providing youth with the tools to make good and healthy decisions and includes testimonials from inmates as well. These services, along with the treatment programs available help make Bristol County a safer place to live in by working on the creation of a drug-free environment.
