The Bronx is a borough located in New York City and is Bronx County, which is the third-most densely populated county in the nation. Situated close by are Westchester County, Manhattan, and Queens on the other side of the Harlem River. The population of Bronx County is estimated at over 1.43 million people with a median age of 34 years old, and approximately 29% of residents are living below the federal poverty line. According to the New York State Department of Health, the number of alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths in the county has significantly worsened. Currently, the rate of fatalities is 20 per 100,000 residents; however, it is lower than the state average but higher than NYC. Additionally, the age-adjusted percentage of adults binge drinking in the Bronx is approximately 14.5%. When compared to adult binge drinking in NYC and New York State, the percentage is lower. According to the Bronx Community Health Dashboard, drug use is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in New York State. In 2019, the percentage of people who became addicted to drugs or alcohol increased by 2.2%. Among youth within the Bronx, marijuana is the most widely used drug. However, pain medication, stimulant meds, and benzodiazepines were commonly abused by Bronx youth. During 2018 the youth within the Bronx and Brooklyn were more likely to report taking pain medication and stimulants without a prescription. The illegal use of pain medication is more common among Bronx youth in 11th and 12th grade. Since 2011 there have been significant increases in the amount of youth misusing pain medication. Most youth will find these drugs in their home, such as unused prescriptions. Parents must dispose of any unused prescription drug properly. It is important for anyone struggling with drug or alcohol addiction to seek help. There are various different drug detox centers and substance abuse treatment across the country. Something can be done about it!
