Men and women struggle with substance abuse in different ways, and statistically, more men are addicted to drugs and or alcohol than women. However, more women struggle with becoming sober and maintaining long-term sobriety than men. One of the more critical issues with women abusing drugs or alcohol is when they are pregnant. According to the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF), one in six California women reported binge Definition of the word binge drinking in the three months before pregnancy. Approximately one in thirteen women reported using alcohol during the third trimester, and one in five women reported binge drinking before pregnancy. Roughly 27% of the drug treatment programs, which are publicly funded are specific to treating pregnant women. Excessive drug and alcohol abuse will also lead to overdose resulting in death. Within the state of California, the rate of alcohol-induced deaths was almost three times higher among men than women. Along with this, men were two times as likely as females to die as a result of drug use. For example, in 2016, within the state, the rate of death among women because of alcohol was 6.4 deaths per 100,000 population, and with drugs, it was 8.3 deaths per 100,000 people. How men and women handle substance abuse is much different. Most female addicts struggle with having gone through some form of physical or emotional abuse. The therapy and treatment methodologies used are also different.

The state of California does provide an abundance of drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs and detox facilities, especially for women. There are many questions you should ask to see which type of drug treatment facility is best. Here are just a few examples:

  • Is it better to attend a long-term or short-term drug treatment?
  • Is a detox program necessary?
  • Should I attend a drug rehabilitation program that is local or further away?

If you are unsure of the answers for these questions, we can help.

There are many signs to look for especially physical symptoms, such as loss of weight, restlessness, constant aches and pains, and becoming sick very easily. Other emotional symptoms will be present; rapid mood swings, depression, and an inability to maintain any level of responsibility.
