The rate of drug poisoning deaths in California has been lower than the national rate since 2004 and stable since 2013. However, the national rate has been increasing since 1999, with much of the problem being related to opioids. Drug and alcohol-related deaths in California were highest among those between 36 and 64 years of age. The rate of drug-induced deaths for young adults was significantly higher than the rate of alcohol-induced deaths.

Within the state, 24.2% if adults aged 36 to 64 died because of alcohol, and 22.9% died from drugs, while 9.6% of young adults aged 18 to 25 died from drugs, and 0.5% died from alcohol. Among older adults in the state who are aged 65 or older, 23.7% of them died from alcohol, and 9.4% died because of drugs. Opioids had a significant impact on the number of drug-related deaths within the state. Per the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) report in 2018, in 2017, there were 1,335 out of 1,882 deaths caused by opioid overdose. These overdose deaths were related to prescription opioids, and the number of heroin-related overdose deaths remained flat since 2014. The deaths resulting from fentanyl increased in California by more than 50% between 2016 and 2017.

In most cases, state health insurance providers will cover the cost of drug rehabilitation, but each detox center will accept different forms of insurance.
