Carroll County has been affected by substance abuse in an important way, and this includes its county seat, the city of Hillsville. It has caused a great deal of damage within the community, and the following statistics will only prove this further, focusing on alcohol abuse. For instance, we have alcohol-impaired driving that caused 10 deaths between 2014 and 2018, which accounts for 34% of the 29 driving-related deaths that occurred in this period. Some of these fatalities may have been caused by excessive drinking, and this includes both heavy and binge drinking. In fact, in 2017, 17% of adults in Carroll County reported either binge or heavy drinking, according to County Health Rankings. This type of drinking can cause devastating health problems, such as high blood pressure, lung infection or inflammation, and kidney problems. Treatment is and always will be the most assured option of overcoming an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs. However, depending on several factors, the type of treatment one will attend can differ. For example, those whose addiction issues are more severe might benefit more from inpatient or residential treatment. This program is very intensive and will be helpful for them, as they will be completely removed from their environment and will be given the chance to fully focus on recovering. For certain people, an outpatient program is not an option because trying to remain sober while still being in their usual environment will be too much. It truly depends on each person’s situation, but regardless, so long as they are committed to their recovery, inpatient treatment or any other program can be successful.
