The town of Catskill is located in Greene County and has a population of over 4,000 people. Villages of this size in the state do struggle with residents battling addiction. The counties of Green, Columbia, and Schenectady had higher rates of drug-related hospitalizations than upstate New York. Additionally, Greene and Columbia counties had the highest rates of opiate poisoning related hospitalizations. All of the Capital Region counties had seen significant increases in opiate-poisoning. Men living in the county had higher rates of opiate poisoning related emergency department visits than women. Greene County had the highest rate of residents visiting the hospital for drug-related issues, than any other neighboring county. The age-adjusted drug-related hospitalization rate in the county was 27.7 per 10,000 people. Between 2011 and 2014 in New York State heroin-related overdose deaths tripled. The risk of overdose increases when drug users are mixing drugs or increasing the amount they are taking. Between 2008 and 2010, in Green County and between 2011 and 2013, there was a 4% increase in opiate-related hospitalizations. Across the county are different drug and alcohol treatment programs and services. When searching for drug treatment, opiate addiction is treated with medical detoxification and long-term residential treatment.
