The lower levels of care include the medical detoxification programs which are designed to help addicts with only the withdrawal from the drugs, and the outpatient program. Outpatient treatment usually consists of a patient receiving treatment once or twice a week for roughly an hour each time. The patients are commonly drug tested each week as a form of accountability however there is little stopping the individual from continuing drug use after their meeting each week.

The two forms of treatment that are considered higher levels of care include the short-term inpatient programs as well as the long-term residential ones. Short-term inpatient drug treatment is considered the gold standard or traditional form of drug treatment. These programs last roughly 28 days to 30 days in length and the patients stay at the facility for the duration of the program. Both inpatient and residential programs usually assist with the initial withdrawal from the drugs and alcohol. Long-term residential programs offer the highest level of care when it comes to drug treatment with programs ranging from three months to one year in length. These programs both offer constant support and security while going through the program as well as providing professional care to truly handle the entire addiction.
