Cough Medicine Rehab Centers and Detox Programs in Connecticut

Cough Medicine Addiction and Treatment in Connecticut

Cough and cold medicine addiction have always been issues within every state, throughout the United States, some more so than others, but the problem is there as many of these drugs can be purchased over the counter. Other coughs and cold medicines are given as prescriptions and can become highly addictive when abused or not taken as directed. It can be easy to abuse the over the counter cough and cold medicines, but a user will have to take large quantities of these drugs in order to feel the adverse effects. More commonly than not, people who abuse Dextromethorphan will mix the drug with other drugs such as alcohol or marijuana. The treatment of cough and cold medicine addiction is no different than any other form of treatment; the detox may be difficult for users on large amounts of the drug, but detox will be the first step they take. The rehabilitation and treatment process will either take place within an outpatient or inpatient program, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website do list what programs operate within Connecticut, but there is not a specific directory for cough and cold medicine addiction.

What are some of the effects of Dextromethorphan?

Some of the more serious effects from abusing DXM are of course serious illness or death, but this occurs in rare cases when the user is abusing large amounts of the drug frequently mixed with other drugs, and the other ingredients found in cough and cold medicines. There are many other ingredients found within the cough and cold medicines, and it is the mixture of DXM and these other ingredients that cause respiratory depression, liver failure, seizures, and even in severe cases a coma.

Hydrocodone-based cough syrup can also be addictive, such as Hycodan,  Hycomine and Tussionex.
