Where can I get help for Cough Medicine addiction?

When seeking help for a cough medicine addiction, it is important for the addict to reach out to either family or friends. It is best to contact local inpatient or outpatient drug rehab centers, support groups, or even twelve-step support groups.

Georgia Cough Medicine Addiction and Rehabilitation

Cough and cold medicine addiction are a problem that many young people face, and their families can become directly affected by these issues. Cough medicines can be easily abused because they contain Dextromethorphan, which is a cough suppressant and when abused in large quantities it will cause adverse side effects. Cough and cold medicine addiction can be treated within most drug and alcohol treatment programs, and this includes detox, and inpatient and outpatient treatment. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website do list what programs operate within the state, but there is no specific directory for which services can treat cough and cold medicine abuse and addiction.

Why do young people abuse these drugs?

Over the counter drugs and prescribed cough and cold medicines are commonly abused by young people, and even teens and this is because the over the counter drugs can be easily purchased and if the prescription drugs are found they can be easily abused. There is a percentage of teens who have abused these drugs within the United States, and it is important that parents can talk to their teens about these drugs, and how dangerous they can be. Things like keeping these medicines out of reach are important, set clear rules and guidelines, and have open and honest discussions about the risks involved with abusing cough and cold medicines.

Hydrocodone-based cough syrup can also be addictive, such as Hycodan,  Hycomine and Tussionex.
