Cumberland is a city that is located in the western portion of the state of Maryland. Home to an estimated population of more than 19,000 people as of 2019 according to the United States Census Bureau, Cumberland is one of the ten most populous cities in the state. But one of the drawbacks of having so many people living so closely together is the risk of increased rates of drug abuse and overdose, something that has been a major issue for Maryland since America’s drug epidemic began in the early 2000s. In 2019 there were 30.2 drug deaths for every 100,000 people according to a report published by America’s Health Rankings, a rate which was well above the national average during that same year. This shows exactly how many people are not getting the help that they need when it comes to drug and alcohol rehabilitation and detox services, and this rate is likely even higher in big cities like Cumberland. Sadly, many people never make it into treatment before their life is lost to addiction, so this is not necessarily the fault of the area’s treatment systems. It is important to understand why this happens so that we can do a better job of preventing the same thing in the future.

One of the biggest reasons why people do not get the help that they need is that they overdose and die before they were ever ready to receive help. This is because they are in early addiction and do not yet realize the severity of their problem. Because they have never tried to quit, they may not understand just how powerful and sneaky addiction can be. They still value the drugs greatly and have experienced no negative consequences yet so have no reason to stop. They are experiencing intense rewards because the drug is providing them with relief from some problems. This could be anything from physical pain to mental or emotional anguish, but whatever it is, the drugs allow them to escape temporarily so the person becomes very protective of their addiction. They will hide it from anyone who they think may try to get them to stop or make it more difficult to obtain or use drugs. This means that they will lie and deceive the people they love most, who will likely be the last to know that they are on drugs.

This can make it seem like it is impossible to help someone if you do not know that they are on drugs, but fortunately, it is not. There are almost always signs of drug use that people usually ignore even though they cause suspicion. But the rule of thumb is that if you suspect it then it is probably true, so you must confront the person about it. If you ignore it because you do not want to upset them or you would prefer to believe that it is not true then you could miss your only opportunity to help the person before it is too late. No one wants to look back after tragedy and wonder why they didn’t do more to save someone’s life. Act now.
