Drug and alcohol abuse have definitely been affecting Dickenson County and its county seat, the city of Clintwood, and it has caused a great deal of damage in their community. This type of issue should be taken very seriously, considering the amount of devastation it can bring, and these next statistics will prove this. The first problem we will be going over is drug poisoning, as in 2016-2018, the drug overdose mortality rate was 14 deaths per 100,000 population, according to County Health Rankings. But this is not the only issue that has caused fatalities in Dickenson County, with one death caused by alcohol-impaired driving between 2014-2018. This previous statistic may seem low, but truth is, even one death caused by substance abuse is one too many. Additionally, excessive drinking was reported by 16% of the county's adult population in 2017. We can see that alcohol and drug abuse is undoubtedly present and that it is an alarming issue for the county. Needless to say, treatment programs are extremely important in this area, as this is the surest option for someone who wishes to overcome their substance abuse problem. Traditional programs can be helpful, but certain people may benefit more from an alternative treatment program. Such a program will incorporate different activities, which may include meditation, art therapy, equine therapy, or acupuncture. They can help the person find out more about themselves and discover new skills that can help them in their recovery, whether it be during their treatment or in the future. Whatever program one ends up being referred to, it can be successful so long as they are committed to getting sober.
