Alameda County has a population of over 1.5 million people and is the 7th most populous county in the state. Alameda County is included as part of the San Francisco Bay Area and occupies much of the East Bay region of the state. The Alameda County Social Services provides extensive drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs and services to the residents of Alameda County. The Alameda Behavioral Health Care Services contracts with the Social Services Agency and provides treatment services to eligible individuals in the county. Some of the rehabilitation services include opioid treatment programs and medication-assisted treatment. Along with this, there is withdrawal management such as clinically managed detox and sobering support. People struggling with addiction can also access residential services, sober living homes, intensive outpatient programs, and recovery support services.

Drug and alcohol addiction in the county has affected many families and individuals living in the county. During 2018 the number of opioid-related overdose deaths in Alameda County reached 56, which was a rate of 3.1 deaths per 100,000 population. Within that same year, there were 285 people admitted into emergency rooms because of an opioid overdose, and 107 people were hospitalized because of an opioid overdose. The number of opioid pain medication prescriptions given out in 2018 reached 676,436, and some of the most common pain medication abused in the county were hydrocodone and oxycodone.
