Located in California’s Central Valley, Butte County makes up the Chico California Metropolitan Area, and the county seat is the city Oroville. Among adolescents within the county, 11th-grade high school students had higher rates of binge drinking, which was also higher than the national average. However, the percentage of teens in the county who have used marijuana, inhalants, and recreational prescription drugs was lower than the overall average in California. Problems with excessive binge drinking and drug abuse often always lead to emergency room visits at local hospitals. The emergency department treatment and release rates for drug and alcohol abuse were considerably higher for Butte County than the rest of California.

The Opioid Crisis in Butte County

The opioid epidemic did not spare Butte County. In 2016, there was an estimation that 6.8% of individuals aged 12 and older misused opioids. This percentage equals 13 891 people. The county had 16 opioid overdoses that resulted in death in that same year. That amounts to more than 1 fatality every month of that year.

According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, in the State of California, the range of drug overdoses that caused death between 2015-2017 was between 6 and 40 deaths. Butte County greatly surpassed that range, with a total f 184 overdose deaths in those two years.

Treatment Services in Butte County, CA

There are several more specific substance abuse programs in Butte County. One of these Is a program for mothers and/or pregnant women. These women have specific needs and requirements when it comes to treatment, but that does not mean they should not get the help they need. This program is outpatient and provides counseling as well as the basic rehab services. There is also a Treatment Court Program, for individuals who are 18 years old and over. They provide felony offenders with alcohol/drug abuse problems with access and treatment. It is a collaboration of the court and law enforcement. There is also an availability of medication-assisted treatment. It consists of combining specific medications, such as Vivitrol or Suboxone, with counseling and other therapies, in order to treat the person as a whole.

Prevention for Prescription Drugs in Butte County

As we’ve said earlier, the opioid epidemic is very present in Butte County. Prevention efforts are made to prevent opioid misuse before people are even exposed to them. The Butte-Glenn Medical Society Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force works together with physicians to create specific instructions and guidelines for prescription medications, including when to continue taking them, when to stop taking them and doing an assessment of the risk and harm of using opioids.
