El Dorado County is currently suffering from an important drug problem, as is the State of California as a whole. This means the community needs many treatment programs needed to combat the ugly disease that is addiction. Services available in El Dorado County include, but are not limited to, inpatient & outpatient programs, addiction meetings, gender-specific services and prevention programs.

El Dorado County Community Health Assessment, Substance Abuse and Addiction

El Dorado County is located entirely in the Sierra Nevada and is part of the Sacramento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade metropolitan statistical area. The county seat in El Dorado is Placerville, and the population of the county has grown along with the greater Sacramento area. Within the county, approximately 8.5% of the population are living in households with income below the Federal Poverty Level, per the 2016 County Community Health Assessment. The unemployment rate in the county in 2015 was 5.3%, and unemployment is often a strong motivating factor for someone to start abusing drugs or alcohol. The rate of unemployment does vary within the state from around 4% in El Dorado Hills to 9.8% in Georgetown.

In 2014 the life expectancy within the county for men was 78 years, and for women, it was 83 years; however, substance abuse does drastically lower the overall life expectancy for both men and women. Approximately 65% of adults in the county who needed help for emotional, mental health, or substance abuse issues obtained help in the last year. Roughly 43% of the motor vehicle crash deaths in the count involved alcohol. Young adults aged 20 to 24 were more likely to be admitted to the emergency room due to alcohol abuse. Adults between the ages of 18 and 34 within the county were more likely to be admitted to the emergency room due to substance abuse.

The Opioid Crisis in El Dorado County

The opioid epidemic has spread through the whole nation, including El Dorado County. The statistics support this. In 2016, it was reported that there were 7 deaths caused by opioid overdose. There are between 584 to 1 150 individuals with an opioid use disorder (OUD) in El Dorado County who do not have local access to treatment. These numbers are very alarming, and they only cover opioids.

Although opioids are a big part of the drug problem, there are many other types of substances that can destroy lives. Based on data collected by County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, there were 113 drug overdoses that resulted in fatalities between 2015 and 2017. This s almost 10 times the average range for California as a whole, which is 12 deaths. Between 2011 and 2015, 43% of all motor vehicle crashes involved the misuse of alcohol.

Youth Drug Use in El Dorado County, CA

We’ve already established that drug use is a great problem in the county. But, we have not yyet covered the use of illicit substances by our youth. In 2015-2016, there were 802.1 substance abuse hospitalizations for ages 15 through 24, per 100 000 population in the county, according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). A California Healthy Kids Survey (CalSCHLS) was conducted in 2017-2018 through the School District of Black Oak Mine. Among those who answered the survey, 61% of 7th grade students had reported using marijuana at least once a month. 46% of them reported trying it at least once or twice. And, concerning alcohol use, 61% of those who answered reported having a few drinks almost every day. These numbers are alarming, as these are very young people, who are regularly using alcohol and/or drugs.

These boxes are useful for those who would like to safely dispose of their expired or unused medications, so they do not end up in the wrong hands. They are committed to helping in the fight against drugs.
