Rehabilitation Services for Drug & Alcohol Abuse in Erie County, New York

Erie County is in the top 10 most populated counties in New York State, with over 900 000 residents. The drug problem is ever so present in this county, just like It is in most of the state. There are many services available in New York to serve those who wish to get help for their addiction. They include inpatient and outpatient programs, services for criminal justice clients, counseling and programs for our veterans.

The Opioid Crisis in Erie County, NY

The opioid epidemic has not spared Erie County. According to a study made by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC), in 2017, there were 251 deaths in the Erie County that were opioid-related, and 65 of these fatalities were between 20-29 years old. These are 65 people who will not get to live through their 30s. This is an alarming statistic and something needs to be done to help fix this issue.

Cocaine Issue in Erie County, NY

Although the opioid epidemic is what is most concerning to the community, the overdose deaths related to cocaine are rising. In 2018, there were 85 cocaine overdose deaths. It was identified in 37% of Erie County’s overdose deaths, which is a big jump compared to 23% in 2016. Most of these deaths were caused by a combination of fentanyl with cocaine.

Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force

We have already covered that in Erie County, the opioid epidemic is a very real problem. This is why the Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force was created. It consists of seven committees that each meet regularly. These committees include Naloxone Access, Treatment Providers and Community Education.

Disposal Sites in Erie County, NY

In Erie County, there are many disposal sites available for the safe disposal of either medications or needles and syringes. First of all, the residents of Erie County have access to several sites so they can dispose of their expired, unwanted or unused medications safely, so these do not end up in the wrong hands. They accept all prescription and over-the-counter medications. The Expanded Syringe Access Program (ESAP) was implemented to provide sites to safely disposed of used needles and syringes, so they are not disposed of in the street, where anyone can get their hands on them.

Erie County’s Sheriff’s Office Substance Abuse Programs

The Sheriff’s Office of Erie County has put in place many programs for the prevention of substance abuse. First, they have implemented the Underage Drinking Enforcement/Prevention Unit. The mission of this unit is to change young people’s awareness and behavior by using prevention strategies, education, treatment, aftercare and also providing them with the resources for recovery if needed. They also meet with the parents, to warn them of the consequences of underage youth being served alcohol. They also have the Public Awareness is Prevention Program, which was created in 1982, to show the community that the best way to reduce substance abuse in the county is by using preventing it. They provide support, information, they work to change policies, and they do much more. They are constantly working to fight substance abuse throughout Erie County.
