Kern County spans the southern end of the Central Valley and is made up of the Bakersfield, California metropolitan statistical area. Within the county is a strong aviation, space, and military presence, and the county is one of the fastest-growing areas in the nation in terms of population growth. The opioid problem in the county has affected many of the residents, and opioid addicts are struggling to get the help they need. Within the county, medication-assisted treatment is challenging to come by, and it is estimated that around 8,000 people in the county suffer from opioid addiction. Approximately three-quarters of the people who need help for opioid addiction are unable to access it. Some of the estimates coming from the public health department suggest the gap could be more significant.

According to the California Opioid Overdose Surveillance Dashboard, in 2018, there were 91 opioid-related deaths in Kern County, which was a rate of 10.3 deaths per 100,000 population. During that same time in 2018, 355 people visited an emergency room because of an opioid overdose, and 95 people were hospitalized because of an opioid overdose. The number of prescription pain medications being handed out has been on a steady decline since 2014. During 2018 the number of prescription opioids given out reached 582,667. Most of the opioid addiction problems have moved to heroin because of the decrease in the number of pain medications being prescribed.
