Situated in the northern part of the state, Siskiyou County is in the Shasta Cascade region along the Oregon border. The county seat is Yreka, and its highest point is Mount Shasta, and overall, the county is a popular tourist destination within the state. Problems with substance abuse have affected the county and the communities living within it. Per a 2019 Siskiyou County Fact Sheet surrounding opioid use and treatment, there were two opioid-related overdose deaths in 2019, which was a rate of 5.3 per 100,000. The age-adjusted rate of drug overdose death in the county was 14 per 100,000 which was higher than the state average but lower than the national average. Approximately 16% of adults in the county engage in excessive drinking. Alcohol-impaired driving deaths contribute to 37% of all driving deaths within the county. The unemployment rate within the county is at 7.2%, and unemployment is a substantial contributing factor for someone to abuse drugs or alcohol.
