Sonoma County in California is north of Marin County, south of Mendocino County, and is west of Napa County and Lake County. Like many southwestern and southern counties in California, it was impacted by the opioid epidemic. In 2018 there were 41 deaths related to opioids, which was a rate of 8.7 deaths per 100,000 population. During that same year in Sonoma County, there were 220 emergency department visits related to opioids and 51 hospitalizations because of opioid-related causes. Prescribing doctors in Sonoma County wrote 346,618 opioid prescriptions in 2018, per the California Opioid Overdose Surveillance Dashboard. Adults aged 50 to 54 saw the highest number of opioid-related problems, along with adults aged 20 to 24 and 30 to 34 years old.
Most residents of California receive detoxification care in residential settings, and others receive treatment through hospital inpatient treatment. In 2016 the state of California had 26 hospitals with 771 beds licensed to provide inpatient treatment, located in only ten counties. Heroin abuse in Sonoma County has been making a comeback, and a new generation of younger users have become addicted. Young middle-class heroin addicts have been emerging in Sonoma County over the last couple of years. Many of the current heroin addicts in the county were once full-time high school students, and most were prescribed pain medication due to injury while playing high school sports. The Sonoma County court has been the final stop for many addicts, where they have had the opportunity to work through treatment programs assigned by the court.
