Boulder Alcohol Education Center (BAEC)

Updated on: 21 May 2026

About this center

Boulder Alcohol Education Center (BAEC) is a privately owned outpatient substance abuse treatment program in Boulder, Colorado, established in 1982 and operating continuously under the direction of founder John Gilburt, Ph.D., CAC III, Licensed Psychologist. Licensed by the Colorado Department of Behavioral Health with subspecialties in Level II Education and Therapy, BAEC is one of the largest private outpatient programs of its type in Colorado, serving clients from across the state and beyond. All services are conducted online via Zoom.

DUI/DWAI Education, Therapy, and a Broad Range of Outpatient Programs

BAEC’s largest population has always been drinking and driving clients, and the center offers Level II DUI, DUID, and DWAI Education and Therapy, Interlock Enhancement Counseling, Offender Education and Treatment for non-DUI cases, and Relapse Prevention programming. Beyond DUI, the center offers a Marijuana Treatment Program, a Minor in Possession and underage substance abuse group program, a university students evaluation and intervention program, a Family Support Program for substance users, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and individual counseling. Evaluations are available for court, custody, professional licensing, and employment purposes, and expert consultation and testimony services are also offered. Initial phone consultations are free.

A Philosophy Built on Education, Responsibility, and Dignity

BAEC was co-founded on the belief that people given accurate, well-directed information about their substance use will want to change, a philosophy that is now standard across the treatment field. The center’s approach holds that each person must take responsibility for their behaviors, understand the dynamics behind them, and commit to a plan for change. Over more than four decades BAEC has treated thousands of clients and is recognized by the State of Colorado and professional colleagues as one of the more effective programs of its kind.
