Athena House is a residential addiction recovery program in Santa Rosa, California that supports women and nonbinary adults whose patterns of alcohol or drug use have begun disrupting their daily functioning, relationships, and responsibilities. Operated by Buckelew Programs, a nonprofit with decades of local history in mental health and substance use care, Athena House offers a structured environment where people live on site and focus deeply on change without stepping completely out of life, community, and future obligations.
A Recovery Environment Rooted in Stability and Community
People tend to arrive here when patterns of use have shown up in real life, affecting work reliability, family ties, housing consistency, or legal standing, and require more than occasional appointments to make sense of what’s happening. The program typically unfolds over 30–90 days of intensive, trauma-informed residential care, with 24/7 support, clinically managed (non-medical) withdrawal assistance, and individualized guidance from staff who draw on both professional training and lived experience.
Everyday Life Included, Not Apart From It
Athena House is designed so that daily routines and recovery work happen together. Residents live in communal spaces, participate in individual and group counseling, learn relapse-prevention and life skills, and engage in wellness activities like mindfulness, outdoor time, and peer support. The setting includes comfortable shared areas, outdoor recreation space, and even provisions for women to bring young children along, supporting parent roles rather than asking them to be left behind.
Connection and Continuity Through Real Challenges
A defining feature of this program is its peer and community support, including access to a strong alumnae network and collaborative care with family services and local agencies. Many residents transition after their stay to Hope Village, a shared sober-living environment on the same campus where they continue building routine, accountability, and connection as they begin applying what they’ve learned to their everyday world.
A Setting for People Ready to Make Lasting Shifts
Athena House tends to be used by individuals who know that the patterns they’ve lived with aren’t working and who are ready to invest time and energy into doing something different. It isn’t about escaping life’s demands; it’s about meeting those demands with new skills, awareness, and support so that when residents return to work, family roles, and community life, they’re better equipped to handle stress, maintain sobriety, and stay connected to what matters most.
