Four Directions Treatment & Recovery Center (FDTRC) is a substance use treatment program operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe in Mescalero, New Mexico. Established by the Tribe in the 1970s, the center provides inpatient and outpatient care at no cost to enrolled members of federally recognized tribes and pueblos. Services are funded through Indian Health Service grants, and the adult programs serve individuals aged 18 and older.
Inpatient, Outpatient, and Aftercare
FDTRC offers inpatient treatment in two lengths, a 90-day program and a 180-day program, along with an outpatient option for those who do not need a live-in stay. After completing primary treatment, adults can continue in a 12-week aftercare program designed to support them as they return to daily life. To be admitted, applicants must show proof of enrollment in a federally recognized tribe or pueblo, have a qualifying substance use diagnosis, complete a physical exam beforehand showing they are medically stable, and be able to participate safely in a group treatment setting.
Counseling, Skills, and Traditional Supports
Treatment at FDTRC combines clinical counseling with cultural and spiritual elements. Clients take part in individual and group counseling, screening and assessment, case management, and substance use education, along with groups on trauma and resiliency, anger management, and stress management. Parenting classes, life skills education, and relapse prevention help prepare clients for life after treatment. Traditional groups, spiritual counseling, and AA and NA support round out the program, giving clients ways to draw on both culture and peer recovery as they rebuild.
