The Institute for Health and Recovery (IHR) is a behavioral health organization whose Boston, Massachusetts office provides counseling and recovery services for individuals and families. Established in 1990, IHR delivers trauma-informed counseling that addresses substance use alongside the broader challenges families face, offered both in the office and out in the community. The organization is accredited by CARF and pairs professional treatment with a compassionate, person-centered approach.
Home and Community-Based Counseling
IHR’s counseling and behavioral health support centers on family-focused, trauma-informed care that treats substance use in the context of each person’s whole life. Its approach is strengths-based, collaborative, and evidence-based, integrating substance use treatment with attention to trauma and co-occurring needs rather than addressing addiction in isolation. Because services are offered in homes and community settings as well as in the office, IHR is able to reach individuals and families who might otherwise struggle to access consistent care, meeting them in the environments where they live and seek support.
Support for Families and Priority Populations
Much of IHR’s work focuses on individuals and families navigating significant challenges, including families experiencing homelessness, those involved with the child welfare system, pregnant and parenting women, and youth at risk. Beyond counseling, the organization offers peer support services, including help connecting to and attending community recovery meetings such as AA and NA, and works to strengthen family communication and relationships. IHR accepts MassHealth and Medicare and draws on public funding sources, reflecting its commitment to making recovery support accessible to those who need it most.
