Samaritan House is a state-certified residential substance abuse treatment facility for adult men in Annapolis, Maryland. Operating for over fifty years, the program sits on a 16-acre wooded campus off Forest Drive and provides a continuum of care that includes residential treatment, transitional housing, and outpatient services for alumni. Samaritan House maintains 32 residential care beds and 18 transitional beds, serving as one of the few certified residential care facilities for men in Anne Arundel County.
A Low-Intensity Residential Program
Samaritan House operates as a low-intensity residential program that balances treatment with personal independence, with lengths of stay ranging from three to nine months. Residents typically spend approximately six months in the intensive program before transitioning to sober living beds on campus. The treatment approach uses evidence-based interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, and 12-step programming, alongside individual and group counseling, family counseling, case management, relapse prevention, and life skills training. Residents attend three group therapy sessions weekly in the evenings and one individual counseling session per week, scheduled around their availability. Clients are required to obtain full-time employment within 21 days of admission and must actively pursue work, education, or vocational training throughout their stay. Three meals per day are included, curfew is set at 11:00 p.m., and residents become eligible for overnight passes after 30 days of compliant participation.
Admissions, Transitional Housing, and Referral Services
Admission requires completion of medical detoxification prior to entry, with referrals accepted from intermediate care facilities, intensive outpatient programs, jail-based substance abuse programs, county and state substance abuse facilities, human service agencies, or through individual requests. Approximately 60 percent of program costs are covered by government sources, with the remaining 40 percent from self-pay or private payments. After completing the residential phase, graduates can move into transitional housing on the same campus while they reestablish themselves in the community, and the program provides outpatient opportunities for alumni to maintain ongoing support. Samaritan House also offers referrals for opiate maintenance therapy, mental health services, government health care programs, and transitional housing beyond its own campus.
