About this center

The Imani Center is a school-based behavioral health support program operated by The Bridge, Inc., a nonprofit community behavioral health organization serving Essex and Union counties with outpatient counseling and support services. Instead of residential treatment, the Imani Center brings recovery-oriented support into the Irvington High School campus, combining mental health counseling, substance use education and youth development services to help students build resilience, coping skills and life pathways while remaining connected to their schooling and community.

Youth-Focused Mental Health, Substance Education & Support

For over three decades, the Imani Center has provided individual, group and family therapy, substance abuse education, referrals and ongoing support directly to at-risk adolescents, working in conjunction with school personnel to identify needs and tailor engagement. Licensed clinicians deliver counseling that helps students explore emotional challenges, develop coping strategies, and address early substance use concerns in a setting that is accessible and familiar.

Growth, Skill Building and Enrichment Beyond Therapy

Beyond clinical support, the Imani Center offers programs aimed at healthy youth development, including academic support, career planning, recreational and community service activities, pregnancy and STD prevention education, independent living skills, tutoring and ESL assistance, all intended to reinforce life skills and future opportunities. Services are offered before, during and after school, and are available in English, Spanish and Creole to meet diverse needs.

Part of a Broader School-Linked Support Network

Embedded within the school environment, the Imani Center functions as part of a school-based services continuum that includes crisis intervention, behavioral health consultation, life skills training and proactive engagement with families and educators. This approach helps students stay on track academically and personally while addressing emotional, social or substance-related challenges within a supportive community framework.

A Campus-Based Option Supporting Teen Stability and Growth

By integrating mental health care, substance education, life skills development and enrichment opportunities within the school day, the Imani Center offers a practical, accessible path for adolescents to strengthen resilience and coping capacity, laying groundwork for healthier patterns and stability without withdrawal from normal daily life.
