Welcome House is a nonprofit recovery center in Kansas City, Missouri, for men over 21 who are rebuilding their lives after substance use. A registered 501(c)(3), it provides residential support to men coming out of treatment, incarceration, or homelessness, using a peer-to-peer model built on accountability, encouragement, and education.
Programs at Different Levels
Welcome House offers several tracks depending on where a man is in his recovery. The entry point is a respite and crisis intervention program, a short stabilization stay for men arriving from jail, treatment, or the street, giving them immediate structure while they establish a routine and decide what comes next. A partial flex program runs up to four and a half months and offers the same services in a shorter format, suited to men who already have some sober time or steady work but want structured support. The main track, the CORE recovery program, runs six to nine months across three levels: the first covers recovery basics and goal setting, the second focuses on sober living and accountability, and the third turns to discharge planning and long-term strategy. Graduates can continue in an advanced residency of six to 12 months that builds leadership skills and prepares men for Missouri certification as peer support specialists.
Support Services and Daily Life
Wrapped around the residential programs are several supports. Recovery coaching pairs each resident with a peer coach. An employment program handles job placement and offers temporary on-site work. Educational workshops cover relapse prevention and financial literacy, and a family counseling program works on communication and rebuilding trust. Wellness programming includes fitness, nutrition, and meals prepared by an in-house chef. Alumni stay connected through fellowship nights and continued peer support. Residents live dorm-style and get three meals a day, a gym, laundry, on-site parking, and recreation space including basketball and pickleball courts.
Requirements and Admission
Men must be genuinely committed to sobriety, stay completely abstinent from drugs and alcohol while they’re there, take part in the program, and either work or volunteer. Applying means filling out an online residency application and then interviewing; men entering under court order coordinate through their attorney with a formal court order. Welcome House supports residents who take medication for addiction but doesn’t prescribe or provide those medications itself, so residents keep working with their own healthcare providers.
