West Coast Post-Trauma Retreat (WCPR) is a six-day residential recovery and trauma processing program in San Rafael, California focused on current, former and retired first responders whose exposure to critical incidents and job-related stress has begun affecting their daily life, emotional wellbeing and relationships. It’s operated by the nonprofit First Responder Support Network (FRSN) and designed to help people move past the deep impact of traumatic work experiences in a small, immersive residential setting.
A Focused Residential Setting When Work-Related Trauma Holds You Back
First responders often come here when repeated attempts to cope on their own, through counseling, medication, or sheer will, haven’t eased their symptoms or restored a sense of balance. WCPR offers a dedicated week-long residential retreat where participants step away from daily pressures and begin processing traumatic experiences alongside peers who understand the unique stresses of emergency service work.
Recovery Through Intensive Peer Support, Education, and Reflection
Rather than brief or intermittent treatment, the retreat integrates therapeutic and educational work, peer support, group debriefings, and structured activities over six consecutive days. Participants engage with clinicians, trained first responder peers, and a chaplain, building skills to understand their reactions to trauma, develop positive coping tools, and recognize triggers before returning to everyday life. Retreats are intentionally small, typically limited to six participants, to allow deeper engagement and support.
Support That Extends Beyond the Retreat
WCPR emphasizes not just short-term relief but lasting insight and resilience. Retreat participants leave with a clearer sense of their own stress responses and new coping strategies, along with a peer support network. There’s also a strong focus on follow-through, including planning for continued recovery work after the residential phase ends.
A Setting for First Responders Needing a Break From the Weight of the Work
The West Coast Post-Trauma Retreat is often used by emergency personnel who feel that stress, traumatic memories, or emotional overload are shaping their daily life in ways that aren’t improving with usual supports. It fits moments when someone needs a concentrated, structured residential retreat that speaks the language of first responders, combining shared experience, therapeutic focus, and community accountability, to help them regain balance, clarity, and forward momentum.
