Drug & Alcohol Addiction Services for the LGBTQ Community in the District of Columbia

For members of the LGBTQ community, living in Washington D.C., drug and alcohol addiction can be effectively treated with the right help. Roughly 20 to 30 % of people who are LGBTQ, will struggle with some type of drug abuse problem. For example, gay men are over nine times more likely to abuse heroin then straight men. Over 25% of people who identify as LGBTQ abuse alcohol and alcohol addiction can lead to other serious addiction problems. Substance abuse is a dangerous problem, and without the proper help, an addict will quickly spiral out of control. There are many challenges that some members of the LGBTQ community face, and this can include discrimination, hate crimes, certain stigma, emotional or physical abuse, and being rejected from family and friends. Many of these issues can force someone to abuse drugs or alcohol, to cope with the problem. Drugs will temporarily alleviate the feelings you are experiencing, but will, in turn, heighten all the negative feelings once the effects of the drugs disappear.
