LGBTQ people who are living in New York and are struggling with any type of drug or alcohol addiction can find help through the treatment programs and services, within the state. Roughly 20 to 30% of the LGBTQ community do struggle with some type of substance abuse disorder. When you have an addiction, it can be impossible at times to imagine your life without drugs or alcohol. There are often many different reasons why someone would choose to abuse drugs. For members of the LGBTQ community, this could be because of high a level of stress from possible discrimination, or hate, sexual abuse, or some type of emotional or physical trauma. These types of issues, when left untreated, will lead to drug or alcohol addiction. The drugs and alcohol are used to cope with the problems, yet the emotional pain will amplify, creating a stronger urge to use drugs and alcohol.
