Drug & Alcohol National Workplace Services in the United States

NATIONAL WORKPLACE SERVICES FOR DRUG & ALCOHOL DEPENDENCY

Drug and alcohol abuse in the American workforce is an on-going problem, and as of 2018, nearly one in eleven job applicants was unable to pass an oral fluid drug screen, and heroin and methamphetamine detection rates increased for a fifth consecutive year. Much of the information is coming from Quest Diagnostics Drug Testing, which is a leading provider of diagnostic information services in the United States. Drug test results that were coming from Quest Diagnostic Drug Testing indicated that prescription opiates positivity rates dropped, while cocaine positivity rates rose in certain states. Methamphetamine positivity rates skyrocketed in the Midwestern and Southern United States, and marijuana positivity on drug testing was considerably high in states that enacted recreational use. Much of the drug use among the American workforce remains at some of the highest rates with cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana. Within 2017, the number of American workers testing positive for illicit drugs was holding steady at 4.2%, which was an increase from the previous year.

In 2017, the date suggested there were shifting patterns of drug use, with cocaine and methamphetamine surging in some areas of the United States. In 2015, 45% of American workers tested positive for marijuana, and this has been a steady increase since 2011. Each person who uses drugs will have a unique reason for why they chose to use an illicit substance. However, there are some common reasons why drug use among the American workforce is up, and this can be attributed to the increase in heroin use and other opioids. Some data has shown that many Americans are stressed out, and struggles to deal with day-to-day life, and drugs such as marijuana are viewed more favorably, especially now that some states are legalizing marijuana. Drug use and work do not mix, and in fact, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence estimates that drug abuse costs employers across the United States roughly $80 billion dollars annually. Drug abuse in the workplace can lead to diminished productivity, excessive absenteeism, injuries, low employee morale, theft, fatalities, and an increase in healthcare expenses.

Many employers today are working to provide low-stress places of work to help deter drug and alcohol abuse, and employers are offering support and resources to help those who may have become addicted. An employer will have the most power to make positive changes in the workplace, creating a drug-free place of work. Many employers will have written policies, such as internal guide lines that will outline the law and regulations surrounding drug and alcohol use. These policies should also include the consequences when someone is found abusing drug and alcohol. Information will also be provided about community resources for substance abuse treatment and support. Wellness programs and regular training can help workers make positive choices and remain drug and alcohol free while at work. Some companies in the United States will do drug testing to help deter the use of drugs and alcohol, and this will be written within the internal workplace policy. Employee assistance programs are common practice, and will offer psycho education, counseling, and other wellness resources to employees. It will be important for employers to operate as an organization that priorities the physical and mental health of the employee and provide employees an opportunity to prevent and address substance issues.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are the more recognized organization for helping employers develop a workplace drug and alcohol abuse policy and the necessary support and preventative measures. Components of a drug-free workplace can be found through the SAMHSA website, and it will help guide employers to make develop this type of internal policy. The Division of Workplace Programs is the organization to contact within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Along with this, many other external resources are provided to help employers become knowledgeable on current preventative techniques, such as preventing prescription-drug abuse in the workplace, for example. Many different non-government organizations throughout the United States also provide resources to employers, to help them develop these policies, and keep the workplace drug and alcohol free. For example, there is the Drug Free Workplace Pennsylvania, which is a grant-funded program dedicated to helping business in Pennsylvania navigate the world of substance abuse disorder. This organization, in particular, will assist in the creation and implementation of drug-free workplace programs, and they are funded through a grant by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and all the services are offered completely free. Consulting and training firms within the United States often provide services to help employers, for example, an organization called Working Partners is one of these particular firms. This organization is a consulting and training firm experienced in creating behavioral changes in adults who improve the quality of the workforce and can help implement and operate drug-free workplace programs. Drug testing facilities across the United States also work closely with employers to help implement drug testing and drug-free workplace policies. The overall purpose off all of this is to ensure a place of work is safe for all employees, and the proper care and support are provided when an employee requires the help.
