Co-occurring disorders were formerly known as dual diagnosis or dual disorder, and it refers to someone being diagnosed with a mental illness and a substance abuse disorder. For example, many people throughout the state of Missouri may be suffering from severe depression and addicted to cocaine. These types of problems are common all throughout the United States, but drug rehabilitation programs and detox centers in Missouri are fully equipped to treat people who are suffering from a co-occurring disorder. Unfortunately, someone who is diagnosed with a mental illness has often prescribed some type of narcotic medication. The combination of prescription drugs and illegal street drugs can be a dangerous combination and will increase the chances of overdose. Locating the proper treatment does not have to be difficult, and resources in Missouri will include the correct detox, therapy, counseling, and medication management programs to help people with co-occurring disorders.
