Co-Occurring Disorders and Substance Abuse in New York

According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, during 2018, approximately 19.3 million Americans had a substance abuse disorder in the past year. Within that same year, roughly 9.2 million Americans struggled with co-occurring disorders, which means psychological problems along with substance abuse. Drug and alcohol abuse does increase the number of psychological problems the person will deal with during their lifetime. These issues become worse leading to more substance abuse. According to the Rockefeller Institute of Government, between 2010 and 2015, the number of deaths from a drug overdose and chronic drug use increased by 71%. During this time in New York State, the problems were worse in upstate and suburban communities within the state.

Within New York City, there was a 45% increase in the number of annual drug-related deaths. When people are struggling with psychological issues and substance abuse, there are programs to help. Both outpatient and inpatient drug treatment centers in New York State offer treatment for co-occurring disorders. There are many situations where addicts are having to withdrawal from both prescription medication and illicit drugs or alcohol. The prevalence of prescription drug abuse is much higher when someone is abusing illicit drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, the risk of overdose increases when this is the case. There are countless situations where a drug user has overdosed, whether fatal or not when prescription drugs and illicit drugs were combined.
