Children who are living with a parent addicted to drugs or alcohol are in a dangerous situation. The most important thing for parents to do is get help. There are some drug rehab centers in California able to treat addicts with children. Meaning, they are equipped to help supervise the children or care for them. For example, an outpatient drug rehab center may provide daycare services. Whereas a residential program offers residential beds for children, while their parents go through treatment. The level of accommodation will depend on the program.
Some treatment centers may encourage the parents to have their kids be part of the therapy process. This can help build a stable foundation for everyone. Between 2009 and 2014 one out of every eight kids in America lived with a drug-addicted parent, per a national survey and those numbers have only continued to rise. The Center for Disease Control reported that the state of California alone had over 10,000 drug-related deaths in 2020. Substance abuse is a dangerous problem. When children grow up watching their parents addicted to drugs and alcohol, they have an increased likelihood to also abuse drugs or alcohol.
