Drug and alcohol abuse only worsen the longer it is left untreated. When an addict falls deeper down the hole, it becomes more difficult to treat the addiction. For some parents living in New York, battling addiction with their children around them is a dangerous situation. When this happens the parents or parents are at risk of losing their child. In fact, this can be a strong motivating factor for the parent to want to get help. Some states will require the parent to go to treatment with their children. This will help during the family therapy process. When children can work through the issues they are battling with. It does help build a stronger foundation. Drug addiction will only become worse if it is not treated right away. The level of accommodation for parents and their kids is different for each program. Some inpatient or outpatient treatment centers in New York will offer daycare services. Other programs will provide in-house services such as residential beds for clients’ children.
The Importance of Children Being Part of the Treatment and Recovery Process
When there are one or both parents struggling with addiction, there may be children involved. The children may have been taken away or are still living at home. Within the state of New York are some family therapy programs and or treatment centers that specifically help children become incorporated into the treatment process. Depending on the child’s age and individual circumstances, the children need to be part of the healing process. Many people who suffer from addiction are parents, which does make seeking treatment more difficult. Some treatment programs allow children of a certain age to stay with addicted parents in the facility. However, most treatment centers help a family arrange for care for children while their parents attend treatment.
According to Child Trends, during 2017 within the United States, one in three children entered foster care because of parental substance abuse. In 2017 it was the sixth consecutive year of an increase of children entering foster care because of parental drug abuse. New York State was one of six states in 2017 that saw the most significant rate of increase. Besides substance abuse, there are also many other factors why children are placed in foster care. Drug treatment programs for parents with children is an option if the service is available. Typically, the rehabilitation program will work with the family to ensure the children have someone to take care of them unless the state becomes involved.
