Date rape drugs are a class of drugs known as central nervous system depressants and they gained their name from their role in drugged sexual assault. Common date rape drugs are Rohypnol or “roofies”, Ketamine and GHB. While ketamine is actually an animal tranquilizer and GHB is common in nightlife such as in clubs or raves. Addiction to these substances is not only occurring everywhere but also has some significantly dangerous side effects associated with the abuse of the drugs. Like many drugs, an overdose is a high possibility when abusing drugs such as date rape drugs and even one gram of Ketamine can be lethal to the user. Withdrawal occurs whenever someone chronically uses any drug and can range from symptoms such as nausea and insomnia to hallucinations or seizures. Date rape drugs cause withdrawal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, agitation, tremors, and drug cravings. As drug use is continued, the body becomes dependent on the drugs feeling as though it needs the drugs in order to survive. This can occupy much of the addict’s attention when attempting to quit the use of the substances making the process rather challenging and often with little success when attempted without treatment. When the withdrawal symptoms and drug cravings become too unbearable, drug use is often resumed to end the discomfort from the detoxification process.
