By the year 2050, the Hispanic population in the United States is expected to grow to 112 million, which will account for approximately one-third of the projected U.S. population. According to a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a report examining drug use prevalence rates by subgroups, Puerto Ricans, and other Hispanics had the highest rates of illicit drug use in the United States, with 6.0% of Puerto Ricans abusing drugs. The lowest rate of Hispanic drug use occurred among South Americans with 2.1% abusing drugs or alcohol. The use of marijuana was the highest among Puerto Ricans at 5.6%, and Cubans and South Americans had the lowest rate of marijuana use with 2.1%.

The rates of heavy alcohol use were highest among Mexicans at 7.4% and lowest among Cubans, with 1.7% of the Cuban American population. Most of the treatment admissions for substance abuse among Hispanics included over 40% being Mexican American, 34% Puerto Rican, and 3% Cuban American. Within the state of the rates of drug and alcohol-induced deaths were lower when compared to American India/Alaskan Native, Caucasian, and African Americans. In 2016 approximately 14.4% of Hispanic Americans who were substance abusers suffered an alcohol-induced death, while 6.7% suffered a drug-induced death. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 15 million Hispanics lived in California in 2014, and California has six times as many Hispanics as it did in 1970.
