El Dorado County is located entirely in the Sierra Nevada and is part of the Sacramento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade metropolitan statistical area. The county seat in El Dorado is Placerville, and the population of the county has grown along with the greater Sacramento area. Within the county, approximately 8.5% of the population are living in households with income below the Federal Poverty Level, per the 2016 County Community Health Assessment. The rate of unemployment does vary within the state from around 4% in El Dorado Hills to 9.8% in Georgetown.

In 2014 the life expectancy within the county for men was 78 years, and for women, it was 83 years; however, substance abuse does drastically lower the overall life expectancy for both men and women. Approximately 65% of adults in the county who needed help for emotional, mental health, or substance abuse issues obtained help in the last year. Roughly 43% of the motor vehicle crash deaths in the count involved alcohol. Young adults aged 20 to 24 were more likely to be admitted to the emergency room due to alcohol abuse. Adults between the ages of 18 and 34 within the county were more likely to be admitted to the emergency room due to substance abuse.

These numbers are alarming, as these are very young people, who are regularly using alcohol and/or drugs.
