The Employee Assistance Program or an EAP is an employee benefit program, which essentially assists employees in their companies who are struggling with personal or work related problems that may impact their job performance, physical and mental health, and overall well-being. An employee assistance program will generally offer free and confidential assessments, or short-term counseling, referrals to treatment centers, or follow-up services for those who access treatment. An employee assistance program counselor will often work with the necessary departments in the company, and will help with addressing the challenges and needs of the organization.

The employee assistance programs have grown over the years not only help employees with work-related problems, but extend to help them with all the problems outside of work; they may be struggling with. When employee assistance programs have been studied, some results have shown that it can result in the employer having lower medical costs, a reduced rate of employee turnover, and productivity among employees tends to be higher. With an employee assistance program, the employee typically has access to a 24-hour hotline, and if an in-person appointment is needed, it can often be arranged quickly. When using an EAP service, all someone has to do is call the toll-free number provided by the employer, and simply go over everything that needs to be addressed, and from there further services or help will be recommended or organized. For a face to face visit, this will depend on the type of employee assistance program, and some may provide a certain number of visits per calendar year that are free of charge.

When the federal government of the United States will consider a company a drug-free workplace, the organization will have to have an employee assistance program. The EAP must always be free for any employee to access at any time, and must be open to all employees within the company. The employee assistance program provided must offer quality counseling, referrals for treatment, education and prevention, and any additional services that may be needed to help the employee. It is not uncommon for an employee assistance program to have a mandatory referral policy, which means if an employee is suspected of using drugs or alcohol and is not seeking out help, they may be mandated to use the employee assistance program before they are able to return to work.
